Serious Property Offences Are Increasing — Prevention Is Easier Than Subsequent Investigations

While offences classified as simple theft are declining, serious theft and robbery are increasing year on year. Apartments are often broken into and ransacked while the occupants are on holiday. Therefore it is important, on the one hand, that you ensure your letterbox is emptied regularly or is emptied on your behalf during absences, because an overfull letterbox is a sign to burglars that an apartment is unattended. On the other hand, attentive neighbours are better than any watchdog. Perhaps one of those neighbours can collect your post and create some “movement” in your flat — for example by switching the lights on in the evening now and then, airing the rooms and so on — because that usually deters burglars who have been casing the property.

Perpetrators Increasingly Do Not Recoil From Violence

In residential burglaries, the aggressiveness of perpetrators is steadily increasing. Most burglaries no longer occur at night under the cover of darkness but during the daytime, on the assumption that the occupants are at work and the children are at school. The offender breaks a window or the front door and, once inside, rarely cares whether someone might actually be at home. Everything that is not fixed in place is taken: smartphones, digital cameras, laptops, tablets, jewellery and other valuables. It is important to the offender that the loot can be carried away quickly and without much effort and that a fence will give as much cash as possible for it.

For various reasons it can nevertheless happen that someone is present in the apartment. Then there is imminent danger. If the offender has not yet entered the apartment, they will very likely prefer to disappear in order to try their luck on another day. If, however, they are already in the apartment, being so close to the loot they will rarely retreat. Police findings indicate that occupants who are encountered are increasingly attacked and overpowered. Some perpetrators act extremely brutally in order to demonstrate their power to the helpless victim.

Subsequent Traumatisation of Many Victims

For the victim, such a burglary can have traumatic effects: one no longer feels safe in one’s own four walls, flinches at every sound, repeatedly and panic-drivenly checks doors and windows, and so on.
